There are loads of characters in Mario Kart World, 50 to be precise, but you don’t have access to them all at the start of the game. If you want to get Donkey Kong, Rosalina and others you’re going to have to do a little work. Today I’m going to show you how to unlock characters in Mario Kart World.

First of all, I’m going to be covering how to unlock characters, rather than how to get different outfits. I’ll cover that in another video at a later time.

How to unlock characters

There are different ways to unlock characters. To unlock some characters you need to win Cups in Grand Prix Mode, and you unlock other characters through the Kamek item in races.

To unlock characters in the Cups, all you need to do is complete the cup. For example you unlock Donkey Kong by finishing the Mushroom Cup. The same for Rosalina, you complete the Star Cup. I’ll go through all the characters and which cups in a moment.

Unlocking other characters via Kamek is a little bit tougher, this is because what Kamek turns you into is down to random luck. Kamek is an item, similar to other item you pick up via question mark blocks, and when you use Kamek, you’ll turn other drivers into characters. You only unlock the character if you get turned into it, rather than using the Kamek item to zap someone else in a race, so bare that in mind.

Here is how to unlock characters, and how to do each one.

Donkey Kong – Complete the Mushroom Cup
Daisy – Complete the Flower Cup
Rosalina – Play the Star Cup
Birdo – Complete the Banana Cup
Lakitu – Play the Shell Cup
Bowser Jr. – Complete the Lightning Cup
King Boo – Play the Leaf Cup

Here are the characters that Kamek turns you into at random.

Cataquack – Get turned into a Cataquack by Kamek
Chargin’ Chuck – Get turned into a Chargin’ Chuck by Kamek
Coin Coffer – Get turned into a Coin Coffer by Kamek
Conkdor – Get turned into a Condor by Kamek
Pianta – Get turned into a Pianta by Kamek

Here are some other characters, which you will likely need to be turned into via Kamek – but this still needs to be confirmed.  

Dolphin
Fish Bone
Peepa
Rocky Wrench
Spike
Swoop
