The rewind feature in Mario Kart World is one of the game’s most helpful tools—especially for mastering new mechanics like wall-riding, grinding, and tricky jumps. But Mario Kart World, a Nintendo Switch 2 launch title, doesn’t tell you about it. There’s no tutorial, no prompt—just you, the track, and a hidden way to improve through trial and error.
How to Rewind in Mario Kart World
To rewind the last five seconds of gameplay, simply press Down on the D-pad. This lets you instantly retry a missed shortcut, recover from a bad crash, or nail the timing on a tough jump. It’s especially useful during Battle Mode to dodge incoming hazards you didn’t see coming the first time.
However, rewind has its limits. If you’re playing a timed challenge—like Time Trials or specific Free Roam missions—the clock won’t rewind with you. You’ll return to your earlier position, but the timer keeps ticking, which can easily cost you the challenge. In those cases, your best option is to pause the game and select Retry instead.
Keep in mind that computer-controlled racers won’t rewind with you. Their positions stay the same, so you may still fall behind. Still, if you’re trying to learn tough courses like Rainbow Road, rewind is a great way to practice those brutal corners without restarting the entire cup.
Where Can You Use Rewind?
Rewind is only available in single-player modes and Free Roam. You can also use it while waiting in a multiplayer lobby—but not during actual multiplayer races. Here are the modes where rewind is supported:
Grand Prix
Battle Mode
Vs Race
Knockout Tour
Time Trials
