Mario Paint Joins Switch Online’s SNES Library with Mouse Support

Nintendo has added Mario Paint to the SNES lineup on Switch Online. Originally released in 1992, the game was one of the first to use mouse controls on consoles, bundled back then with the SNES Mouse.

The re-release on Switch Online supports mouse input only. On Switch 2, users can take advantage of the system’s built-in Joy-Con motion controls. Original Switch users will need to connect a USB mouse to play.

Mario Paint is a creative tool that lets players draw, stamp, and animate images using Nintendo-themed assets like Super Mario World sprites. It also features a basic animation tool with up to nine frames.

The game is especially remembered for its music composer, where players can place icons to build simple songs. Despite its limitations—no sharp or flat notes, and a 24-measure limit—it became a cult hit years later thanks to fan-made compositions shared online.

Mario Paint is available with a standard Switch Online subscription, priced at $19.99 / £17.99 / €19.99 per year.
